- Following strong releases on labels like Quiet Time Tapes and Ana Ott, the german experimentalist Phil Struck portrays to us a trip to Schleswig-Holstein which is in one of the sixteen Länder of Germany (Aufnahmen meaning « shots »). This part of the country is located in the northest side of the country.
This album sure is a beautiful blend of multi-textured soundscapes, tribal ambient percussions, paning electroacoustic wavy synth soaking in a « dark new age » atmosphere. Although most of the tracks don’t use rhythm, the listener is heavily carried away by the natural recordings of winds, fireworks (i really liked these), locusts and feels this vision of a dark northern landscape. Phil Struck is using pretty long pieces (10+ min), with very dark drones evocative of Basinski’s works.
The tones are always criss-crossing on this fine line that separates experimental concrete music and a more reassuring predictable sound, drawing the qualities of these 2 styles without losing the attentive listener. Get ready to lose yourself in this suspenseful work.
