I have a version of this with a letter a capital A near the spindle hole on both sides….

Can anyone explain why this pressing is sold for so much? I fortunately got it free from a family friend but I'm just curious

If you own this copy (hell, even if you don't), you owe it to yourself to own an 80's press of this album on CD as well. It sounds much more abrasive (in a good way) and intense, I was really surprised pleased when hearing and comparing to this record. I think I may actually prefer the CD, lol.

This is the version of the number one best metal album of all time! Hard to find a good version of the album these days... to be honest, you have to crank this album to really feel everything. Very spot on master.

Amazing press -- the biggest difference off the bat is that the vinyl is not as wet as the digital/CD version. It appears that they mask the compression with some reverb to give it more of a room sound. This version is clean, crisp, and unrelentingly aggressive. A must have for the biggest Met fans.

Best Metallica album. I have a vinyl copy that's unopened. It says Elektra/Asylum. Not sure how to distinguish Allied Press from Specialty press version.

I will write my favorite pressing to the worst.
1)Elektra Columbia House (Club Edition) of 1986: I get this version recently because i tried to find a decent copy from a decent seller almost a year. This version must be the best of the album. It is the most natural and explosive version I have listen. The instruments are more separated than the "DMM" Elektra pressings below and the sound more clean. Also has more details and lively sound. When I put this version loud.. very loud, I feel that someone tried to eat me alive. What a power and what a sound. I really get shocked from the incredible sound here.
Closing, it has the most noticiable bass and the most natural drums you can find. And it's the most brighter version too. The "Allied and Specialty" pressings have more punchy sound but also and more noisy and this one has more natural sound with amazing atmosphere and depth. Also the aggression is unbelivable. Do not miss this pressing.
2)Elektra Allied Press (this one). The 2nd best version of the album. Insane brightness, explosion and very sharp sound.
3)Elektra Specialty Press. Very similar to Allied pressing but has some few noises in the Welcome Home and Damage inc but nothing serious
4)Vertigo Europe 2001 Reissue: One of the most serious vinyl pressings of the album. You can get amazing power and quality here with minimun IGD in the last song of each side and without any surface noise. The instruments they sound very powerful and the music has big explosion. If you can, get this pressing because it's outstanding in my opinion. Very cheap at the momment and very balance sound. The cut on this vinyl was amazing.
5)MFN 45 RPM 87. This pressing is very brutal and loud but it feels little compressed. I can listen many noises in the music when i put it loud. Compare it with the 1st Elektra Pressing it sound more louder and heavier but also not so sharp with plenty of noises. Still amazing pressing.
6)Roadrunner 1st Press. Amazing Pressing to listen the album. Big bass that makes the album more warmer and great atmopshere and explosion. This is one of the best versions that has ordinary cutting method. Make sure to get this version in great shape because my first copy sounded bad because was "VG" and i get a new one in "NM" condition.
7)Rhino version from Box Set of 2004: This version remind you the "MFN 45 RPM". It sounds very loud and very powerful with big mass. The problem here for me is this version has giant low end and not upper end. Master of Puppets it shines on upper end imo. This thing messed little the sound and buried the instruments. The original clarity and atmosphere was deleted in some point but still is a listenable material.
8)CBS/SONY Japan Press. The sound is very clean and bright. But you miss the explosion and the power of one "DM Mastering" pressing or the Columbia house edition. Also this version lags from bass and punchy sound. Still great material to have. You can enjoy the album without issues.
9)Greece Vertigo 92 Press. This pressing remind me the 1st Elekra pressings. It's very sharp with amazing brightness and explosion. And has not a "DM" mastering like the "Elektra pressings. The only problem here is you get some distortions on the last song of each side.
10)Vertigo Europe 89 Press. This pressing it sound "ok" but nothing serious. Has big low end and combinied with the "DMM" process the sound is very muddy and mess the clarity of the music. Also the pressing it is not so loud and when you up the volume you listen only the low end the cover all the instruments and you thing the upper end and the mids has deleted. But overall it's "ok" (I guess?) pressing for casual listenings.
11)MNF 1st Pressing. This Pressing perhaps is one of the worst original press of the album that i own. The music is very weak and you must have a giant soundsystem to listen loud the music. Also the instruments they sound very plastic without realistic sound or something. I listen the "Disposable Heroes" and when the drums go in, i feel someone tickle my ears comparing with the 1st Elektra pressings. Also many noises here. Avoid this pressing.
12)France 1st press with silver labels. This pressing is very similar with the MFN 1st pressing. Here you can listen the same things.
13)Blackened 2017 Remasterd. This pressing it sound very weak and very buried. You can't listen the true power of the album and the music, barely come out from your speakers. Also i do not like the remastered comparing with the original album and that is an extra reason to avoid this pressing.
14)South Korea 1989 Reissue. A collective material and nothing more. Moderate pressing and also missing 3 legendary songs of the album.
15)Universal "Louder Faster Heavier" 45 RPM 08 Press. This pressing must be one of the worst pressing of the world. The album it sound very mechanic without realistic guitars and instruments. Also the press is very bad and you listen many noises and sound deformations all over the place. Surely one mp3 can sound miles better than this pressing.
I make this comment because out there only the die-hard collectors of the band knows which pressing is the best but know one speak about quality. They only care to collect the items instead to listen them. So i try to help you out with my comment. Also here is my list with more details:

Master of Puppets is hands down the most important metal album of the 80s. It helped transition Metallica from underground heroes to world giants, but also brought Thrash Metal to the mainstream with it.

Absolutely amazing press. I got this for a steal too.

3,247 people do NOT have this particular pressing. I really wish more people were reliable.
