Reviews
- Edited 2 months agoThe ONLY Shanice studio album you'll ever need, which is really a crying shame because this woman had all the tools necessary to become a major superstar back during the '90s. Unfortunately, the former Star Search standout fell victim to blatant mismanagement and questionable industry tastes that kept her career stalled indefinitely to this day. Her 1999 self-titled LaFace debut was supposed to finally break her into the mainstream for good (especially with strong contemporary R&B singles like "When I Close My Eyes" and "Yesterday"), but apparently Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds and longtime label partner L.A. Reid were no longer seeing eye-to-eye anymore around that time and therefore Shanice ended up getting lost in the shuffle yet again. That said, the only thing that truly kept this album from getting a well-deserved 5-star rating from me is the fact that only TWO TRACKS feature an actual drummer (renowned industry vet/ex-Yellowjacket Ricky Lawson). As a result, the production dates it quite a bit and nearly undoes Shanice's incredible vocal performance in some spots. Thankfully, the overall album quality remains at a consistently high level throughout so it doesn't detract much from the listening experience. Highly recommended, but I still feel Shanice has yet to put out her definitive studio masterpiece. Here's hoping she finally does someday...
