This album came as a very pleasant surprise. I remember reading an early interview with Illa J (shortly after his brother's death) where he stated that he wasn't rapping or even liking Hip Hop music until shortly before Dilla died. So when this release was announced my expectations weren't exactly high. The bigger was my surprise when I gave this album a listen. The beats are vintage Dilla material reminiscent of the stuff he produced for The Pharcyde, mainly relaxed chilled out sample ladden beats. Also Illa J's raps positively surprised me. In fact he also does some singing here and there which actually suits him more but considering he wasn't rapping two years before this was recorded the results are great. Also this time the sound quality of all material is great as it's supposed to be. None of the beats are what one could consider throwaway material and they all sounded new to me, so it's probably some really old archive material from the mid to late 90's.
If you like Labcabincalifornia by The Pharcyde as much as I do, I highly recommend you check this album out.
