Feel free to ignore the first two CD's - respectively, the mixes from Markus and Giuseppe; they overwhelmingly feature your generic, cheesy and overdone contemporary trance.

The final CD on the set, from Roger Shah's Sunlounger project, however, is a bit of a sleeper hit. True to the series name, it seeps with the romantic vibes of some sleepy, idyllic island on the Mediterranean. Nevertheless, the mix is sometimes melancholic, sometimes euphoric, never oversaturated (except perhaps in the last track) and always mindful of its 'chillout' orientation, as evidenced by the word's frequent appearance throughout the sixteen tracks. Here, Shah tends to forego elaborate transition and mixing. Instead, he allows the tracks to delicately drift from one to the next in minimalist fashion. It works quite well for the purposes of a chill, restrained mix.

There are moments of quietly-explosive, melodic tracks, such as in 'Gratitude' or '8K', that punctuate the ambiance with visceral emotion. They serve as elegant reminders of how 'euphoric trance' could benefit from eschewing melodramatic, brash buildups, which have become overly formulaic and telegraphed within the genre, in favor of simplicity and consistency of form. The club versions of many of these tracks seem to grate against my ears, in comparison.

The pared-down Sunset remix of 'This Is All We Have' is probably the mix's finest moment, with a gorgeous array of synths and vocals percolating and moving in relation to one another. Incidentally, it features one of the most pronounced beats of the mix, though still mindful enough to restrain itself. Only the last track is of questionable inclusion, being a bit too aggressive on uninteresting vocals.

This super-downtempo, Balearic mix is a style that I wish were more popular nowadays, as there is a certain ease and bliss of listening that lends itself to the music. Cheers to Shah for an evocative - if transient - escape from the ever-growing horrors of the world.
