MP Productions - EP 1 is a record which demonstrates the great breadth and depth of Mark Pritchard’s production abilities. Throughout his long, distinguished career Pritchard has stood apart for the way in which he is able to move between different styles of electronic music without losing the core essence of his sound. MP Productions - EP 1 sees him repeat this feat - the beats and tempos may change throughout, but a continued focus on rhythmic drive, harmonious synth work and low-end theory means that the EP comes together into a delightful whole.
Pritchard kicks things off with ‘Be Like Water’, an idiosyncratic take on eight-bar grime. The beat programming here hisses and snaps with the heft of old-school sublow, but the track’s sombre chords, meandering melody and sinogrime synth lines give it a lovely balance of light and shade. This is deft, emotionally complex dance music, and in this sense ‘Be Like Water’ sets the tone for the rest of MP Productions - EP 1. That said, Pritchard largely leaves the Eski sonics behind from here on out in order to put his own spin on a variety of genre archetypes, including jungle, electro, techno and dancehall.
Mark Pritchard’s MP Productions - EP 1 draws from his work in projects like Africa HiTech, Global Communication and Jedi Knights. The result is an EP which finds a wide variety of club styles - grime, techno, machine-funk and more - elevated by Pritchard’s production brilliance. Bleep.com
