Before Randy Newman won his Oscar, before he became an "institution", he wrote wry, ironic , intelligent songs.
I was spoiled by hearing "Nilsson Sings Newman" before I heard this live Randy Newman lp. Nilsson was a hell of a singer, and his takes on "Yellow Man", and "Living Without You" are more listenable to me than Newman's voice, which is fairly limited, sort of like a black man's growl.
At times, his limited voice is an asset and reveals real sincerity, as on his classic "Marie" and, probably the best song he's ever written, "I Think It's Going to Rain Today".
With the exception of "Cowboy", "I Think It's Going To Rain Today", and "Living Without You", the songs all feature Randy Newman's original brand of humor. Lots of fun songs on here.
