Referencing Sparks - When I Kiss You (I Hear Charlie Parker Playing). This vinyl 12" is of course from the dark days between the decline of the vinyl format and its revival in the 21st century. Sparks seemed to have fallen victim to the record company fashion at the time, which was to issue huge numbers of remixes, most with "trendy-at-the-time" names associated with them.

The 12" UK release (Sparks - When I Kiss You (I Hear Charlie Parker Playing)) doesn't have the actual core song "When I Kiss You" on it, so is a slight disappointment in that respect. Of the interminable remixes, the Bernard Butler instrumental (Track B1) has stood the test of time best, with its plangent solo guitar line over the top of Ron and Russell's electronic backing. It's still a pleasing mash-up of 90s Britpop guitar and West Coast house, via a German record label (Logic were based in Frankfurt).

For my money, the other mixes tend to drift by in a haze of "put a donk on it"-type beats [thankfully they don't use that yobbo spoken word sample, though], with A2 being the only one with any of Russell Mael's vocal on it - and, of course, the witty lyrics are part of the charm of most Sparks songs.

Intriguing as a relic of "The Day Sparks Met Cool Dance Music - Part 94" but the CD single at least has the radio edit, so may be a better buy for casual listeners.

The Logic pressing is OK - clean and fairly well-defined in audio terms, although nothing special. A big pantomime "Boooo!" for 33 1/3 rpm, though. 12-inch singles always sound better mastered at 45rpm!
