- Probably my most played album in my entire collection over the past 20+ years, it just never tires on my ears. If I had to pick an absolute favourite of the basic channel projects and iterations, this one would be it. It just never ages or tires on the mind, body or spirit, I imagine this will be what I hear walking through the gates of heaven, it's unlike anything before and after.
- I have to agree with Pipecock's comment. It truly feels like an album more than a compilation. The way the tracks flow with each is like if they were always meant to be together. A must have for any Dub lovers out there.
Also, No Partial might be one of the greatest minimal dub track ever composed, but that's just my opinion ;) - Edited 12 years agoThis is the finest 'Rhythm & Sound' compilation / album release!
No need for 'Commentary' if you are familiar with 'Dub Techno'
If you have not heard this one, Grab It !!!
The rest is left up to your imagination ?
'CLASSIC' compilation / album from: 'Moritz Von Oswald' & 'Mark Ernestus' [Basic Channel] - Edited 18 years agoI generally would never consider a compilation of previously released material a true "album". However, this collection fits everything together so perfectly that it's hard to imagine this not being a complete statement from Rhythm and Sound. Beginning with "No Partial", which actually sounds more like a convential dub track than anything else on the album, they take dub and electronic music in general deeper than anyone before or since. "Distance" conjurs up the feeling of looking out over the ocean with a grey sky above you and a storm just about to come through. "Smile" is super deep house music with a peaceful message of "when we fight, we lose" with a thick layer of hiss overtop. "Outward" is a darker track that consists of nothing more than a few synth chords, a kick drum, and echo, but it still manages to elicit more emotion than any 10,000 house or techno records. "Carrier" is a warm sounding jam that would be perfect for watching waves while the sun sets. All of this music is deep and expressive despite using minimal elements and broken sounding old equipment. This is essential electronic music.
- Edited 20 years agoEmpty and cold? Those words describe what it's like in a solitary confinement prison cell, not the feeling you get from dub music, or any style of dub for that matter, such as this amazing techno-dub hybrid. The trademark, thick, analog Basic Channel/Chain Reaction styled synth sounds and powerful and heavy, but subtle percussive elements work to create a more immersive and meditative feeling in the listening experience than traditional dub with live instruments.
Truly profound modern dub work, in both composition and production. I'd recommend all the other Rhythm & Sound CDs if you like this one. Certain ones have more vocals than others (this one only having a couple vocal tracks), but the vocals are for the most part outstanding. - Wonderful record. Gotinto BC via Hawtin and this opened me up to a hole middle ground lurking in the shadows between Dub and Techno. Empty, cold, uneasy music. (those are compliments)
