Originally a private issue of 10 lp records in 1972.
Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai, have written and recorded expressly for RCA catalogue a series of original compositions of great interest, which have been collected under a heading called DIMENSIONI SONORE. The first limited and private issue consisted of 10 LP Records, here restored and digitally edited in a six CD Box Limited Release. The music of each track was created in order to give, in a series of expressive dynamic work through constant timbric exploitations and multiform musical parameters, ample possibilities of utilization. Due to the varied possibilities of utilization, we are not giving a description of each composition, as it is easily done with background music. The titles chosen for each composition do not have any meaning with the music itself. The only way to discern the meaning and the feeling of these compositions is to listen to them. In the restoration of the old tapes, we have not used electronic additions or other kinds of filters used today. Special attention has been taken to preserve the original sound of the original recording sessions; the sound of each instrument is absolutely the same as when it was first recorded. The listening feeling is intact in the same way as the Composers originally intended.
Special thanks to Lionel G. Woodman.
The 6 cds are housed in card sleeves.
Limited edition 500 copies.

Lionel Woodman was the producer on this release alongside the great musical historian Roberto Zamori - the 'special thanks' mention on this release is woefully incorrect and needs to be known - Lionel's been around since day 1 on Italian soundtracks so please some respect is due!

Ok this is so much for the retro style revival... but this 6 CD box set is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous in strictly musical terms: avant-garde written music and improvisations, orchestral instruments fused with electric effected guitars, electronics layers made astotally integrated into the music, totally craftmanship of the musicians involved who were the top players at time, and finally two names like Morricone and Nicolai.
The "sound scapes" evoked by this big bunch of equaly distributed tracks cover a wide range with one strong unique intentional purpose of ingrediendts involved who never seems to bother for HOW intruments are used, just like organic parts into a multifunctional structure.
So "Structure" and "Magma" are the main words here transferred into sounds: exactly for what they were originally intended, the music has this imaginative feeling and areally workable mission for figurative imagination.
Overrall the improvisational style seems to deliver a strong emotional array of deep sensations, but they are gloomy and savage with screechting and high pitched strings on the steady drumming dinamicity of the alwyas good-at Enzo Restuccia filled with adding interesting strange percussion, wich seems to cover the most strange metallic and "signaling" part of the music.
There's no surprise but always pleasure when electronics and synths ccome in to join and if still uncreditred these hints can be addressed to Roland Kayn who was largely implied into GINC albums.
Ultimately, and non plus ultra, near the proper orchestra classic instruments there's the otherworldy wiisphering vocals by Edda Dell'Orso, that reminds me how important the "Sprechgesang" or "Cantato Parlato" style was stronlgy took for integrating parts into music: no one else better than her would have add vocalization as a cristalline primary voicing, and so since Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire" this particular tecnique has widely allowed the human voice into the music wich siometimes can seems so far and alienated from our "visible" feelings.
Analizing the origin of the music contained here and the original year of RCA albums release, (approximatively 1972-1974), it is easy to suggest that when the Maestros were busy recording precise Original Soundtracks for films, they surely had enough material unused wich could came into their background music library production.
So the players are the same ones always used and reliabled for the many famous known albums but the output has a deeper ingredient wich easily can put this music near the heavy elucubrations of the modern contemporary music scene, starting from the atonal syle to the most purely noise "improv-sectional" mood.
But the final result is obtained at a different purpose and functional degree: so strict is the connection between the session players and the idea of composers that they became ONE thinking mind in improving the final results: the space limit between musical idea and the functional gesture to obtain it is cancelled and it comes out as easy as we proceed into listening to music.
The "Leggiadria" mood from wich sounds are assembled is astounding: we hear that every gesture- sound has a proper meaning and everyone adds to the final delivery.
Nicolai's music would start from military percussive broody marches to fast up nigthtime marimba arpeggio's, or stoned ambiental lullabies made of crotales and tintilling metallic effects, together with the Maestros always present Organ wich fullfill the musical space with mistery and a timbric linearity.
With Restuccia's inconfondible drumming being the main connection link, the different session players achieve a similarity of intents, just when is not a surprise that Morricone and Nicolai shared many musical relationships during the early Seventies: they both pass above same ways but in a distinctive manner.
So skilled are the players they can "see-trough" the musical piece itself to add alwayas more with no fear of being redundant: the purpose of imagination gives each track a very strong "eidetic" power and the timbrical research is steady with every effort of classicity and modernity: for example, in Nicolai's "Mutamenti" a string pizzicato is near an electronic reproduction of rain dropping , giving an overral impression of similarity above distinctive sources.
So main is the fact itself that all the players had a long time partnership in connection with heavy improvisational rehearsing and strict score composing, that soon it just works out as the most prolific production of quality music that overcomes any precise purpose but give listeners the freedom to fully enjoy with mind and body.
It was not long far from new age music to keep the listeners into a particular pain free state of mind and this epocal box set just makes this music so special and incontrovertible limitless in time, as they are 6 cds with more than 5 hours of music.
The listeners can only dare to try to discern similarity and sameness for each Italian Maestros only after many repetitive listening enjoyment, and i suggest in conclusion to take each CDs as a little son with singular identity: in doing so it will come clear as strong is the purpose of such music to relaxation for deeper thinking, and how we should not be frightned by these strong sounds , wich are exactly cathartic as every music should be and should led to.
DELUXE 5 STARS ***** for the future amateurs who took it from the past, too.
