Reviews
Show All 98 Reviews- This is an absolutely incredible reissue for the price. Lower-cost sleeve in tight shrink, but perfectly flat black wax inside. Low, low noise floor – nearly dead silent. Kevin Gray did a great job with the master. This is a great primary copy for most collectors, especially those without the budget to spend many times the cost of this pressing for a Music Matters or Analogue Productions copy.
For those noting the distortion on the piano on A1, that clipping distortion is present on the master tapes and all versions of this release – the result of an enthusiastic Bobby Timmons playing his signature tune. It's the kind of quirk that, IMHO, makes Van Gelder's recordings so authentic. - Anyone else experience distortion during the piano smashes towards the end of track 1? Is this inherent to the recording or did I just get a bad copy?
- Dead silent copy. Excellent sound quality this one, another winner from Kevin Gray and the pressing team.
- I don't have any of the issues that others have noted. Flat record, no non-fill, record was clean out of the package, nearly dead silent, and dynamic and alive sounding. Then each side kind of fell apart in the last minute with some distortion. Can't really complain too much as I got it for $22 at Target. If it wasn't for the last minutes, I'd say it was one of the best sounding record in the collection.
- Terrible amount of non-fills. This will be the last record I buy from these Blue Note series, even though some of them are ok. I'm just tired of returning records now.
- I was lucky enough to receive a dead-quiet, flawless copy. This is a bargain AAA record. This record is worth every penny!
- Non-fill for me. Unacceptable level on Jymie Merrit's solo on Moanin'. What's odd is this isn't visible to the eye, whereas the visible non-fill on the next track isn't nearly as offending. Shame as mastering is superb. Oh well. Try for another copy.
- I have had two of these. Both have had significant surface noise leading into track one on side one. Disappointing. This is a great release. Deserves better treatment.
