A deep dive into America's most passionate musical genre, albeit in the starker, sexier and more desperate tradition, "Take Me To The River: A Southern Soul Story 1961-1977" is appropriately titled in the sense that it does what so many compilations fail to do - its subtly powerful contents take you on a journey into a largely unfamiliar world from which you emerge feeling breathless and a little dazed, but greatly satisfied and infinitely more knowledgeable. If you have four hours to spare and require further edification of the Memphis soul arena, this high-quality three-disc set will amply deliver the necessary goods. Incontestably aimed at modern collectors upgrading to the digital format in a bid to preserve their incredibly rare 45s, Kent Soul's chronological charting of a type of soul music that was initially rendered simply and performed with barely constrained intensity is as thorough and well-curated as you would expect, tracing its gospel roots and country-imbued formative years and detailing its shift towards rhythm-and-blues sensibility resplendent with solemnity, grit and sadness. Spanning 1961 until 1977, when synthesizers entered the picture, emphasizing groove and danceability, smoothing the rough edges and hard-driving energy of deep soul, the story told across the 75 tracks herein is meandering, expansive and almost outstays its welcome, but the payoff is considerable.
