Reviews
- Edited 12 years agoThis is pretty much the best dance music compilation ever released, at least if you're a disco/boogie/vocal house fan. Almost every track on it is a timeless classic, and they're presented in their full 12 inch or dance remix versions. There's just a few small flaws that make it a bit less than perfect. Firstly, as noted above, the version of "Forget Me Nots" is not the 12" version rather than the shorter album version, even though the 12" version is readily available as a bonus track on the CD reissue of the album. Secondly, the inclusion of the a cappella version of "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" on the second disc feels odd. I don't think this comp was meant to be a DJ tool, and for the home listener the a cappella is merely a pointless curiosity.
Some purists may complain about the Eurodance tunes on disc 4, but they're all actually fine examples of the genre, fondly remembered by many clubbers of that era. The only problem with that disc is that including two Robin S. tunes is a bit too much. The Stonebridge remix of "Show Me Love" deserves its classic status, but "Luv 4 Luv" feels superfluous here, considering it's very similar to "Show Me Love". It would've been nicer if it had been replaced by some other classic Eurodance 12 inch, such as Corona's "Rhythm of the Night". However, the inclusion of both the 12" version and Patrick Cowley remix of "I Feel Love" is justified, as both mixes are well known and great.
These minor quibbles aside, Ben Liebrand has done a great job collecting all these historic disco shakers on one compilation. Besides the original 12" versions the comp also has a few special edits, which expand the dancefloor friendliness of the original tunes even further. The dub/vocal edit of "You're the One for Me" is especially worth a mention: it makes the (already brilliant) original sleeker and deeper, emphasizing its proto-house quality. "Grand 12-Inches" also has some neat bookends, as it begins with the Rosetta Stone of all dance music, "I Feel Love", and ends with Liebrand's remix (previously available only on hard-to-find vinyl) of "Moments in Love", a beautiful, mellow reworking of this seminal chill-out classic. - Edited 16 years agoAfter relasing Grandmix after Grandmix, worldwide known mastermixer Ben Liebrand decided to present the roots of his career, a sort of "Back To Mine": the songs that inspired him, presented in their full length versions.
Many tried it before, some compilations are good but most others aren't.
This is totally different. The versions featured here are digitally transferred from original production masters. Although not entirely flawless, this is probably the best "various artists" compilation series of 12" versions you can get. That means: as far as the soul/disco/funk department is concerned.
