Reviews
- I never warmed to this record. To me if feels mostly dull and uninspired, like a bunch of odds and ends assembled with no cohesion.
Surely not a terrible record, but one of the least interesting in the Coil catalog, up there with "Gold is the Metal" and "Stolen and Contaminated Songs."
I almost never listen to it, and when I do, I'm reminded that I'd rather hear just about any other record of theirs. - Tucked into the middle of their discography, this album is often overlooked in ranking Coil's output. This might be their peak. With the acid house experiment fully rinsed from their system, but before donning tinfoil hats for the Time Machine-era recordings, they created Black Light District: dense, atmospheric, textured, and utterly unique compositions that showcased their considerable creativity finally matched to modern, high-fidelity recording. When someone asks "where do I start with Coil?", this is a crucial early step.
