Notes
Lazer Guided Melodies is the first installment in Fat Possum's four-part "The Spaceman Reissue Program".
This limited special edition pressed on 180g white vinyl and housed in a gatefold sleeve with heavyweight custom inner sleeves.
Available from Fat Possum's webstore, Bandcamp, VMP, and various indie retailers (standard black vinyl edition here).
On Mastering & Manufacturing:
Per Fat Possum, this release "...mastered from a half speed lacquer cut from original sources by Alchemy Mastering".
Per side A runout, Alchemy's senior mastering engineer, Barry Grint ("Bazza"), did the mastering/cutting.
Again per runouts, GZ Media manufactured metal stampers from Alchemy's lacquer master.
And, finally, Memphis Record Pressing used GZ's stampers to press the vinyl.
On Runouts, Sides A-D:
Each runout includes both stamped and hand-etched sections and characters. For the most part, sections consisting of stamped characters are inverted (upside-down) relative to the hand-etched sections. For simplicity's sake, runouts are recorded here in sectional sequence, as encountered by the traveling needle, with inverted sections in reading order.
Selected Sleeve Text:
Original 16 track recordings by Paul Adkins at VHF Sound Centre, Rugby, November 1990. Additional recording at Moles Studio, Bath by Mike Long, May 1991. Angel Sigh recorded by Angus Wallace at Far Heath Studio, Northamptonshire, July 1991. Originally produced by J. Spaceman.
Mixed at Gooseberry Studio, London, January 1992. 200 Bars and Symphony Space mixed at Comforts Place Studios, January 1992.
...The artwork for this special edition features new photographs of the model figures made for the original album artwork. The figures were made by Gavin Lindsay, based on a drawing by Mr Ugly (Nicholas Brooker).
In loving memory of Nicholas "Natty" Brooker.
Some copies from fatpossum.com came with 2 badges - a red one and a blue one.
300 copies were available exclusively from Rough Trade which included an art print of the cover. (Catalog Number FP17513PRINT)

- Edited 6 months agoGorgeous vinyl! Can't wait to get the others in the set...
I heard crackling?!? on the intro and freaked - cleaned it again - more crackling - cleaned it again (velvet brush) - DEAD QUIET! Lesson I learned: just because you hear noise, doesn't mean it's the vinyl! Both 45s played dead fucking quiet.............BEAUTIFUL - Beautiful reissue! Sounds great! I haven’t heard an original but not sure that I really need to. This is way better than my old CD version and so enjoyable.
- Edited one year agoI just got my hands on an original 1992 pressing, which has a stellar reputation for sounding amazing, and did an A/B comparison with this 2021 reissue. And I must say... they sound identical. It is unbelievable, like GZ had the original lacquers to repress from. Did they? Anyhow, the engineers did a bangup job with this. My only complaint: WHY did they change the cover art?? It looks like total sh_t. The white background only emphasizes all the banding in the gradients. The original cover is so iconic. I could understand it if it was a remix, or demo versions, but the music is an exact replica of the the O.G., so it should have the same cover art. It would have been far more impressive to do an exact replica of the O.G., except make it a gatefold.
- I avoided picking up this reissue for ages, due to all the negative comments here. But a friend of mine was flat-out raving about it to me this week, so I took a chance - and I’m glad I did. It sounds fantastic, no issues with warping, extraneous noise, whatever; if anything, this pressing has given me a new appreciation for this incredible album that I’ve loved for 30 years.
- There is nothing limited about this release. Still available at their site. As is the case with all colored vinyls of the other titles.
- No warps. No crackles or pops. Decent pressing, but no substitute for my copy of the original pressing.
- My first copy came with sides C/D twice and no side A/B... so I got to take three looks at the quality control issues talked about here (after I got my replacement). All three had a noticeable dark scuff near the end of side C, but it was purely a visual blemish and had no effect on playback. Pressing sounds fantastic, and neither my initial or replacement copy had any warping to speak of. Overall, no reason to avoid this one unless having a pristine white disc is a deal breaker for you.
- how did they cut this at 45rpm i thought side d was 18 min long? ig if it sounds good then it’s good tho
- My copy sounds very good, but there is some wild ripping during the last 20 or so revolutions of side C. If it weren't for that I would give this pressing a perfect rating, but unfortunately, the noise at the end of that side cannot be ignored. Anybody else hear this?
