The LIVE cuts are from a concert at the Santa Monica Civic back in 1968...The rest recorded at various studios on both coasts...Havens was a gifted singer with an unusual style that was distinctly his own...When you heard Richie, you KNEW it was Richie...Such much good stuff crammed on this two LP set...I found these records in near mint condition in the BARGAIN BIN in my city How much? Try FIFTY cents...Yes, so much good stuff out there at a tremendous value but most importantly it is THIS great music from a true Rock singer who was a genius of his day, Richie Havens...

His originals are what makes this worth seeking out. In addition to the songs previously mentioned, Cautiously is another devastatingly beautiful song to check out here, not written by Havens but also not a record company pleasing hit by one of the greats of the day. Just an incredible song and production. Worth noting is Colin Walcott on sitar and Steven Stills on bass playing on Just Above My Hobby Horse’s Head. I think this is an essential Richie Havens record overall. Even the covers are done with care and sound different enough to be interesting. You really can’t go wrong.
