I don't get the inclusion of Mr. Muggs, yet the omissions of Frances The Mute (the song) and Ambuletz.
Beautiful boxset! Even though I own all the OG pressings (sans the first 2 albums that I regrettably sold a couple years back), I immediately pre-ordered this boxset from Clouds Hill anyway, because I knew it would quickly sell out and mainly since they promised superior sound quality vs the old brickwalled versions I knew & loved. However, I only give it 4 stars because for as much as we paid, they could've/should've included poly inner sleeves, not cardstock/paper! No wonder people had so many issues, with scratches, etc (thankfully I lucked out somehow). Clouds Hill could've saved themselves a ton of $, had they not cheaped out on something so important! Oh well, I'm just happy all the Volta heads that weren't crazy enough (like myself) to collect all the OG stuff, finally got a chance to own this all on vinyl!
I kind of wish they would've stayed more true to the OG pressings and went with colored vinyl, had square labels like the OG Noctourniquet and had a Mr Muggs planchet shaped picture disk, like the OG Bedlam and included the Frances The Mute single but, that would've made the boxset more expensive. That's ok though, nothing wrong with standard black wax. I'm pretty pleased with it, overall. ✌️- This is an awesome box set. The plinth and asymmetric opening are both fantastic ideas never before seen. The remix-all-the-covers outer box art rivals The Floyd in their pomp. The contents are lush and the vinyl excellent. Comes in integral packing with complete rigid foam wraparound inside a card box, so little chance of damage. However, I have a number of carps:
1. Several of the covers have long vertical abrasions (1 - 2 cm) which are hard to see happening once boxed so must have happened pre-boxing. Not good enough at the price (and this set is top-whack expensive).
2. The bottom right corners of many of the LPs are blackened by the black paper inside the box, where the one has bumped up against the other. The LPs are slightly loose in the box and can move; internal bracing was needed to stop this happening when mailed.
3. Landscape Tantrums is in a paper sleeve. Come on guys...
4. Mr Muggs, at this price, ought to recreate the original planchette.
5. No Francis The Mute - the track. Come on guys...
6. No shrink or hype stickers on any of the LPs. That would have stopped (2) and possibly reduced (1).
7. Despite presale hype, the book is not hardbound but fairly flimsy paper throughout. Come on guys...
So not perfect. But what a concept. It gets 4 Stars (out of 5) from me. - Perfect box set. All of the records were clean, not scratched and flat as a pancake. Sounds awesome!
The records are all a bit scratched when you open the set.
My boxset arrived in very good shape, no scratches or hairlines, all discs are in perfect condition even it’s not 180g.
My records all sound great. I agree that printed inners are garbage, and it's really annoying how many labels seem to be using them recently, but I just moved all my records into MoFis and threw the bad inners inside the gatefolds or next to the non-gatefold sleeves. I'm of the opinion that inserts are literally always strictly better than printed inners... would have been cool if this set had inserts instead. But anyway, in terms of sound quality, as far as I can tell, it's top notch.
Disapointment - dirty and upfront scratched records, probably no more than 2 records looked pristine right out the innersleeve. Very few polylined inners (mainly rough paper ones) which is a warning, this is obviously a cheap charlie box and a first when it comes to Optimal plant. There will be a lot emails for replacements here...- It’s still available on Amazon AU for $648. Don’t pay the rip off prices.
Never received mine, despite having pre-ordered direct from Clouds Hill. They claim they lost the order in the post and could not replace it.. lied about that as well as the tracking info showed it was never shipped. Terrible service, I will never deal with them again.
