This is one of the best SACD mixes of any classic rock album. It's not quite as good as Roxy's Avalon- the mix is a bit too sharp and harsh in places. The sound stage is wide deep and tall creating an immense space for the instrumentation and Bowies voice to inhabit with so much clarity and definition. The bass is thick and phatt without distortion at volume and it doesn't drown out the production. I wish Bowies entire back catalogue had been given the SACD treatment- along with so many more classic albums old and new. I still have my fingers crossed that with the revival of CD someone will spot the potential of investing in SACD special editions of more classic albums in a niche audiophile series similar to what happened with the vinyl revival. I think that might still become a reality as people seem to want more physical product.
Playing this from a Marantz SA-11s2 player and it sounds amazing, just a touch too bright from being perfect tonally but this is the most amazing sounding version. And I've had various versions on LP from the Mobile Fidelity to Japanese pressings, UK pressings, half speed remaster, etc.
Simply excellent stereo mix & mastering. This might just be my favorite version across formats. They really should have done his entire catalog like this.
The Stereo layer of this is the Ziggy Stardust you want to hear. People expect impossible things out of the sound of this album, and you will realise it listening to this. This is how it's meant to sound. This does it justice, to every single track. The one you crank and "PLAY AT MAXIMUM VOLUME" no problemo.
If you have the means to listen to sacd layer proper then it's awesome. No sabre or r2r dac, good dac with akm chipset, sounds amazing. One of my best/cherished sacd.

In reference to a 4th variant, IFPI 07M6, and specifically the 2 channel elements. A worthy entry in the myriad list of Ziggy remasters. Both layers have unique to this release mastering, and both sound amazing. Any issues with the sound is with the source. I think the notion of a definitive edition of this recording is now an absurdity. Whichever version sounds best to you... that is the definitive edition.
