Notes

"The Charisma Years" features all of Van der Graaf Generator's albums from 1970 to 1978, as well as two full-length concerts from 1975 and 1976, all extant BBC recordings, studio sessions, and videos. In addition to each album being newly remastered, "H To He, Who Am The Only One", "Pawn Hearts", "Godbluff", and "Still Life" also received new stereo and 5.1 surround mixes. These albums were also released in their own 2CD/1DVD packages, featuring both stereo mixes on two CDs and all three mixes on DVD.

A postcard signed by the members of Van der Graaf Generator and David Jackson was also included in a limited number of copies pre-ordered through Burning Shed online shop.

Track CD1-7 Refugees (Single Version) does not appear to be the actual 7" single version. I just got a copy of that 7" and the A-side runs for 5:28 (vs 5:20 on this box set). The original 7" has a slightly longer fade-out.
The box set version also appears to have a(n) (more prominent) orchestral score.
The 2005 CD reissue of The Least We Can Do... has the correct 7" version in case you are after a digital copy.

it's not made clear here, but this box set is the size of an LP. it contains a hardback book, and two cardboard gatefold sleeves that contain all the CDs and blurays in pockets. when i ordered this, i was thinking it would be a CD size box, but it's LP size. nice!!

Currently back in print and available at Amazon at a discounted price of $142 which is pretty stunningly low in my eyes for this set and allowed me the chance to finally purchase it as the prior mid to upper $200s that was the standard cost for the first edition was out of reach for me.

The Charisma Years 1970-1978 is an excellent retrospective, with a nice presentation and a sound worthy of 2021. Unfortunately the album recorded from July 1971 to April 1975 released by Sofa Sound on cassette and LP does not appear in The Charisma Years 1970-1978 while this album is the one that most needed to be remastered and modernized.

Hats off to Stephen W Tayler on the remix/remastering. Given his career at Trident, he was the RIGHT man for the job, so thanks to Mark Powell for another standard-setting box set. Sound is perfect, especially considering it was recorded 40-50 years ago. Crisp, fresh, vibrant and plenty of headroom to turn it loud. Absolute perfect tribute to VdGG and their music.
