The Reprise Albums (1968-1971) (CD, Album, Reissue, Remastered, Stereo, CD, Album, Reissue, Remastered, Stereo, CD, Album, Reissue, Remastered, Stereo, CD, Album, Reissue, Remastered, Stereo, Box Set, Compilation)
have to say I'm totally impressed with this box-set... I've been trying to get a near mint original pressing of Blue for ages, but prices were just ridiculous ... so happy with this collection. Even though Blue looked like it had some pressing issues it sounded just fantastic... lots of warmth... Can't recommend enough...
Based on the reviews here of this "inferior" box set, I'm curious to listen the albums the reviewers are referencing to... they certainly must be out of this world because to me this box set sounds just incredible.
I think some of the criticism is horribly hyperbolic here: washy mp3 sound; empty, thin and shrill; recorded in a high school classroom? Really, honestly that bad? Vastly overstated complaints. It would be more helpful if the criticism were more measured.
I love Joni and have listened to all of her albums dozens of times. I was so excited to hear the new mix of Song to a Seagull, but I have to say I am hugely disappointed. Some of the songs now sound like they were recorded inside of a high school classroom, and the title track has an awful, 80 kbps washy mp3 sound to it. If you have access to Spotify or another streaming service, play them side by side and you’ll see what I’m talking about. I haven’t listened to the other three albums, and those may sound fine, but I just wanted to warn anyone out there thinking about buying this to try and check it out before dropping $100+. On a side note, I am thrilled that she is finally opening her vault and getting some of this cool stuff out there. Would love a high quality video release of the 1974 London show or the acoustic Hissing demos.
The remix of Seagull is def superior to the original. Joni’s voice soars in comparison. Low end is more full and soundstage is perfection. David Crosby’s original mix was disliked by most fans, not the least by Crosby himself. Joni finally got the mix she always wanted and it’s amazing! The only complaint I have is some nonfill for a split second on Marcie. The other albums of the set are flawless. Best packaging for a box set I’ve seen in while. The tip-on sleeves are true to form! Double Five Star recommendation!
