- Black Pumas - Self-titled Deluxe
In response to the other reviews on here, yes, this edition’s mix of the album itself, the gold LP, LP One, leaves a slight bit to be desired and is somewhat underwhelming. The gold colored vinyl also results in a bit of surface noise. All of that is true. But the second you put on side C and hear the intimate acoustic version of Fast Car, that will all go away. As much as any audiophile release, that track is demo-worthy and sounds like Black Pumas is in your living room performing live for you, if your setup can handle it. Tracks like that alone are why we listen to vinyl, and as far as I know, it’s not available anywhere else. Ok, now that that’s out of the way, my personal recommendation, if you’re as big of a fan of this album as I am, is buying the Deluxe version, just for LP2 (the rest of it, especially the live tracks, is also great, but Fast Car is life-changing.) and the packaging. Then get the standard black European Optimal pressing (can be had for $30-40 with European shipping or you might get lucky and find one stateside), throw away the gold version (or better yet, frame it and put it up as wall-art), and replace it with the Optimal black vinyl. Trust me, it’s worth it. The packaging of the Deluxe is spectacular, and LP2 seems to be, for the most part, mastered somewhat better (although a few of the unreleased tracks sound like the same, overcompressed mastering chain as the gold LP1, but they’re unreleased elsewhere on vinyl, so what can you do). That’s all I have to say about that, other than, yeah, this is the best and freshest debut album made in the last 20 years, so I’m not saying a word else about the music itself. Come at me. Actually, don’t, just listen to this record and see what I mean.

Boring. It’s been sleeping time sine y’all put your first. Pumas, breathe, band, chill friends.
Not a great pressing of a great record (best of 2019 in my opinion)- My copy unfortunately had persistent surface noise all throughout. Shame.
Edited one year agoGood, flat pressings with little to no surface noise. Mix is a bit flat and unexciting. Good separation but for a few muddy areas where musical layers build up.- Pre-orders from ATO came with an auto graphed print front the band
