Notes

This 12" release is a dance version of this cassette release of field recordings of New York City, created by Charles Stettler. This dance version was a flop, but was later used in 1983 as the backing track to a live rap contest, which Disco 3 won. The group later gained fame as the Fat Boys, with Stettler as executive producer, on his label Tin Pan Apple, which took its name from the original cassette and this 12". For the rap contest, copies were stickered "The Official Dance & Rap Contest 12" Record".

What a strange but satisfying release. Some of the names involved in this record are familiar to those invested in the early 80's NYC music scene but there seems to be little explanation for this oddity. Essentially this a disco-rap record backdropped by field recordings of various parts of the city. The Downtown mix is fairly dated by its rap verses but the B-side is a dubbed out jam that shifts between two sections. Slightly reminiscent of tripped out edits from DJ Harvey or LoudE. Definitely worth it if you find it, considering how cheap it is atm.
