Suface is pretty decent after cleaning all the paper cuttings from it, but this was mastered/cut at a really low level. It sounds pretty nice, but when you push your volume dial up to compensate, you are obviously bringing up the noise floor of the surface.
Excellent album. I'd have preferred plain old black vinyl, which is far easier to clean. New and sealed, even after a dry carbon brushing, there's a bit of crackle at times.
One thing I noticed right away is that this record is mastered very low. I had to crank my amp on side one, then turn down the volume a bit when the chaos kicked in on "Velvet Cave."
But hey! I was happy to find a copy of this reissue. An important record that was years ahead of its time.
The music is incredible but this reissue is mixed at a low volume. Can’t think of any other reissue I own where I needed to greatly increase the volume.
