First got a copy of this around 2003 when I played a lot of garage and grime. At first I thought it was an old skool garage tune from around '97. Couldn't believe it when I found out it was even older, '91 to be precise. The production quality is superb, a track way ahead of its time, would love to hear more like this from the sane period
To say this is an overlooked treasure would be an understatement... very rare!
"Breakout" is a straight up breakbeat stomper with smooth piano breakdowns while "Phase 2" is emotional deep tech-house all the way... two distinct styles on one record.
If you're a fan of labels such as NU Groove, Intrigue, or Network (1990-1991 tech-house) then put this on your MUST HAVE list.
And although no information is available about the producer, "X-Men", the overall production style sounds remarkably like (Toyin Agbetu) "Nemesis"- bassline, keys, and all...
The b-side 'Phase II' has got to be the first intelligent drum and bass track ever. With its simple chords, classic shuffle breakbeat and stuttered melodic bassline punctuated by the legendary 808 bass drum on the offbeat, this is bliss. Also the b-side to 'Child's Play' by them (Read your mind) is also a chilled out beats, bass and ambience masterpiece, both still playable today. (And if anyones got a spare of Child's Play mail me!) hehe.
