Reviews
- Took a chance despite all the negative reviews, and am glad I did. Like a lot of 90s rock records that made with the CD in mind, it needs a little help on the low end - but a slight crank of the bass and volume knobs were all it took to bring out the beef. I loved this album back when it came out, and this vinyl copy is reminding me why. Don’t love the textured cover, but I bought this for the music.
- Noisy pressing. Plentiful pops and crackle between every track.
Dull sound quality, with flat soundstage, castrated cymbals, and jacked-up bass. I'm astounded that other ears are hearing a "wonderful," "fantastic" remaster.
The original CD or Qobuz version of this album is somewhat more dynamic than this vinyl LP reissue, but the CD (which I'm listening to again right now) has its own challenges with soundstaging, harsh treble, and what sounds like tape saturation(?) of the upper frequencies. So maybe this is just a recording that's beyond "fixing"? At least on track 4 (side 1), the acoustic guitar sounds like a real guitar on the CD (not even close on the LP).
And the textured sleeve is one of the more disappointing I've experienced. It's more like corrugated cardboard texture than anything else. Maybe they were going for "shabby-chic"?
I bought this for under US$20 and I regret paying more than $5 for it. Save your money; stick with the CD (which at least you can rip to WAV files and play around with re-equalizing if you care to spend the time experimenting). - Audiophiles!
Reading a few reviews that this is a bad mix/ press!
No need to discuss the music - it's "in it for the money"!
I have a mid priced system - (Marantz/ Audio Technica) and, yes this LP did initially sound a little flat! - I simply turned the Bass setting 2 notches lower and volume up 1 notch that my usual setting and voila! this LP sounds great!! (really good, in fact!) - (not Rocket science! and you Audiophiles with your "Super expensive" systems can have that tip for free!) For £14.50 it actually sounds really good - you cannot complain! (12" bonus is not my cup of tea mix) - but great quality. - Got around to listening to my copy of this and it sounds fantastic. I expected troubles after reading some comments here but it's a beautiful pressing and looks superb in turquoise.
- Edited 2 years agoThe limited Turquoise vinyl pressing sounds absolutely fine to my ears. No crackles and a silent pressing. Pick it up if you find it at a good price
- Awful pressing. Came a bit warped, full of crackles. Loud mastering, not by far what I expected from a punchy album on CD (it's flat on vinyl comparably).
- Took two attempts... first was noisy throughout, not overly so and free of non fill distortion but it had two loud pops so figured id try a replacement. Second one is free of all majot nasties but there is some constant light crackle throughout playing more like a VG+ than a brand new perfect press. Same can be said of the black version. I figure its just how these are pressed but being free of major pops and rips means i can enjoy it. Buy a Sugarcube if a little surface noise bothers you. This is acceptable even if not ideal.
Onto the mastering and this relates to the slightly heavier (pointlessly so) black version.... its really good! This does not sound flat and grey and it does sound analogue. Is it the height of recording and mastering? No, it never has been or will be. Is it very very listenable and free of fatigue, YES. Some of the complaints about the mastering of this LP are far too negative. Even on my humble vintage but high quality and warm leaning kit it doesnt sound muffled or dull, just warm and natural and lovely like analogue should be. Im happy with my copies and at £14 from Amazon ive no real reason to be complaining.
Nice jacket finish too!
