The thought crossed my mind if some reviewers have received a complete different boxset. What is wrong with the original sound of Sunflower? Not much I think. And the remastering is done great. The boxset is beautifully made, with very nice artwork. A great boxset this Feel Flows!

Regarding the multiple bad reviews of the Sunflower min this set: Y’all seem uninitiated in the history of the original engineering of the 1970 recording. The high end and scooped out midrange qualities are baked into the masters. For the much lauded Analogue Productions’ reissue 2016 audiophile reissue, Kevin Gray must have substantially revised the EQ to make Sunflower more palatable to current tastes – it may sound good, but it’s not true to the masters.

I haven’t heard this archival set,m yet, but I gather from the chorus of jeers that apparently Chris Bellman accurately reproduced the master tape sound.

Moreover, there was some failure of follow through in executing the original engineer’s intentions - technical stuff that is beyond me, I’ll admit. This history might well explain the permanence in the off-putting sound of Sunflower. Invest some time and read this crucial Hoffman thread:

Y’all got to know your history!

What a piece of garbage : the sequencing is weird, remastering is poor and the packaging feels cheap.
I sent it back and want nothing to do with it.

Not loving the remaster, and cramming extra tracks onto the ends of original sides is a sin.

Hey, can anyone confirm that the book in this 4LP set has the same contents as the 5CD book? Thanks y’all

Pre-ordered and went straight to Side E (Surf's Up). The mastering is awful, but more than that it sounds like there are manufacturing faults with the pressing - regular drop-outs / distortions throughout the side. These become even more apparent on quieter passages. Some odd mosquito noise at the end of Disney Girls bonus track and at the start of the Feel Flows backing vocals excerpt. As the fault carries across both tracks this has to be in the pressing. The other 7 sides may be perfect, but I'd heard enough and shipped it back to the retailer. Waiting to see if others experience the same issue before requesting a replacement

The box is beautiful the extra and unrealesed music fabulous ... but... the mastering is awful !! The sunflower lp sounds particularly bad and unatural - why the hell did they ruin this beautiful music ?... once again it sounds as if the only purpose was to make a streaming version of the albums that one can listen to on his cell phone ... don t understand why they released vinyl in that case .. please make analog productions press new reissues of their version !

Piss poor. Does anyone else's copy of sunflower sound as if the mastering job has added previously un-noticed kazoos to the mix?
Plus: out of all the outtakes on the cd set, bad choices for the vinyl. Where is the absolutely MAGIC engineer's mix of Til I Die for a start?
Plus: squeezing extra tracks onto the two albums. Bullshit. Especially the live version of Disney Girls straight after the studio version?

MASSIVE MASSIVE DISAPPOINTMENT

Great addition to my collection. Vinyl is great quality and packaging surpassed expectations. Would have been great if the inner sleeves were polylined but my records weren't really affected by it so it doesn't matter that much.

This set is incredible. The amount of extra music included is outstanding—most of which is completely unreleased and comprises entirely new albums (many of these are from the famous “Landlocked” album that was canned, but widely booted). The sound quality is amazing—far above the bootlegs—and you can finally hear these songs as the polished studio tracks they always were.

It’s amazing to know that Brian and the boys produced so much great music during that time that is only being heard widely now. (And it’s very much a band effort here too, as all The Beach Boys share writing and producing credits on these tracks.) It’s great to hear all this amazing work lost to time from Dennis and Al, with Carl’s influence standing out throughout much of the productions. Each member has numerous standout moments (even Mike, who has 1.5 standout moments. Or maybe more like 1.25).

The new remasters of the main albums are great and interesting in new ways (heavier bass at times to my ear). That said, I will still cling closely to my Analogue Productions pressings of these albums, as those are sonically perfect and some of the best vinyl I’ve ever heard. That said, having all these new and unreleased songs mixed in with the music they were producing on the released albums— all at the time—makes for a fuller experience and sort of broadens the musical horizon ever further, as if that was possible.

This set is an absolute must-own for Beach Boys fans. And hopefully it helps endear this oft-overlooked period of an extremely creative band to a new generation of fans.
