i agree with the last poster, this box set is unbelievably and unexpectedly good. i didnt think anything of it when i picked it up in the $2 bin. the cover almost makes it appear like it's some magazine club box set of early jazz. i didn't even read the cover or line ups. All around probably the best jazz compilation I've ever listened to. And yeah, it sounds great too.

Entirely unexpected the quality of reference in performance, artists represented, and sound quality. This is an exceptional box set, of which I usually avoid due to my own preconceptions of said sound quality..however entirely proven wrong. Most cuts engineered by RVG.

Upright acoustic bass in my opinion, is a litmus test to evaluate any well assembled 2-channel analog setup. This is true reference.

Anyone know if there are other Impluse editions which focus on an instrument, besides Bass, Drums, Saxophone?
