Love this album. I'm lucky enough to have found a NM copy in a Kinks collection of about 4 other records. Bought the lot for about £100. Absolute steal. This is a fantastic pressing. Sounds amazing. It has a superb punch on the drums and bass and retains a good level of clarity on all the instruments The only other copy I have to compare it to is the green splatter reissue from a few years ago. Sounds much better than the reissue. Get this if you can find a decent copy for a good price, it's well worth it.

If you have enough cash and lucky enough to find VG+ or better, this version is the one to get.
The difference between the recent mono (2017) is very clear, almost like RVG vs non-RVG in Jazz.

This is one of the most brilliant albums ever conceived.

Ray Davies really outdid himself here. Due to the fact that he was fighting his record company all the time, and the US had essentially blocked the band out of existence..... Ray decided to make an album that his family and friends could love and enjoy, rather than caring for the charts and the machine that is the music industry.

A couple of years prior , Ray had written the track Village Green, and it just missed out on being on the Face to Face album, by about a month. It was seriously considered for the Something Else album .... but Ray withheld it, because it had brought to mind a great idea ....
This album was what became of that great idea..... Again the band were hobbled by their record company, and that is why there are so many variants with releases of this album....

This album is a stunning reminiscence of days gone by. Certainly idealised to some degree, but the way it is written, it is almost like a hybrid of the past, and a secret imaginary world of Ray Davies own creation. The breadth of music on here is stunning, and each song is a journey in and of itself, and the album as a whole is almost like therapy for the heart broken by the ugliness of the modern world... but even so in the lyrics of this album Ray manages to encapsulate the old world, and the new world and lovingly combine them into something else....

We have Ray's famous character driven songs. We have reflections. We have melody, harmony, musicianship, we have everything that one could want in an album right here.

I have the three cd set, but I ended up buying the big box, and I really do highly recommend it, particularly for those who love this album already ... It is still available new at this stage, and I would recommend getting it before the scalpers start punching the price up to ridiculous levels. The presentation is wonderful, but more importantly, it has been put together with more than just making money out of it, like many of the sets I have seen and purchased, which are just fan traps offering measly reward for big investment.
I had given up on the modern records (vinyl, for all you hip cool talking folk out there) they seemed to be terribly poorly made, and super expensive and just not worth my while .... but I did actually play the records from this set, and they were flat, and clean, and beautiful sounding.
I really bought this big box for the extra music on the cd's, but essentially ended up being thrilled with the records ... I actually sat and played all three in a row... and although I do generally prefer cd's (yea I know, blasphemy, tell someone who cares :) ) there seemed to be something that was just right about listening to this beautiful reflective work on the nostalgic record....

Anyway, if you like to listen to albums, and you allow yourself time to get into the sound and feel of this album, you will be rewarded tenfold....

As I say, I highly recommend the big box, or super deluxe, but at the very least get the 3 cd set, so that you get all the wonderful songs that were made, with this album directly in mind.

What is the best sounding pressing? Is there a general consensus?
