Track 1. Taken from Object Lessons: Songs About Products (CD EP compilation, Inconspicuous). Wrote in one sitting
Tracks 2 to 5. Taken from Songs About Fire (4-song 7", Cassiel). Pinball reference in one of these four songs.
Track 6. Taken from The Wedding Record (7" compilation, Walt). Written for the 7" that Dan and Danielle Varenka sent out as a wedding invitation.
Tracks 7 to 10. Taken from Orange Raja, Blood Royal (4-song 7", Walt). Transferred to quarter-inch reels and sent down to New Zealand. Four-track reel-to-reel.
Track 11. Taken from "Hey Dan K." (CD compilation, Ajax [never released]). This song has never been released.
Track 12. Taken from We'll Sail Out Far...Maybe A Little Too Far... (2xLP + 7" compilation, Apartment, Norway; then evidently sold to Wabana and reissued as 2xCD)
Track 13. Taken from Cool Beans! #4 (7" compilation)
Tracks 14 to 19. Taken from Taking The Dative (6-song cassette, Car In Car Disco Product)
Track 20. Taken from Back To The Egg, Asshole (cassette compilation, Shrimper). Early. Very early. Unlistenably early.
Track 21. Taken from The Basement Tapes: Live Recordings at KSPC 1989-1995 (compilation LP, no label)
Tracks 22, 23. Taken from Corkscrewed (cassette compilation, Theme Park, UK)
Tracks 24 to 26. Taken from Tropical Depression (split 7" with Furniture Huschle, Little Mafia)
Tracks 27, 28. Taken from Goar #11 (7" compilation, Germany). The two song-titles from an anagram for "Under Soup, Ancestor Urge."
Track 29. Taken from Hard Core Acoustic (cassette compilation, Shrimper). This is a very early song that was recorded a little later, live on the radio.
Track 30. Taken from Fast Forward 2 (2xCD compilation, Brinkman, Netherlands). It was recorded during the Super Bowl in 1994.
Track 31. Taken from Cyanide Guilt Trip (7" compilation, Cactus Gum). One of the very few songs wrote during the six months when living in Chicago. This song is obliquely about watching the California coastline fade into memory [on] an airplane from L.A. to O'Hare Airport in August of 1995. Quite obliquely, as this song takes place in China.
Thanks to Tim Adams for his long-standing support of this whole project; to everybody who released the records on which these songs originally appeared, including but not limited to Dennis Callaci, Gregor Kessler, Brad Rose, Frank van den Elzen and Fred Maessen, Russell Hill, KSPC, Paul Lukas, Dan Sutton, Joel Huschle and Dan Varenka. Bottles of tequila to Chris Butler and Jon Nall for supplying source material when it turned out that the master tapes had all been sold to pawn shops during a blackout somewhere in the course of yet another season-long buying spree of limited run special editions from small private distilleries. Thanks to the nation of Ghana for lending its name to this collection. Thanks most of all to God #1 for seeing us through.
This is volume three of three compilations of Mountain Goats songs that have graced various formats and labels over the years.
