Reviews
- JBL L100s and Mac 1900 - this album is no where near as bright as people had me thinking it would be. On the contrary, I founded to be very well balanced, fantastic separation, imagery and precise low end. It deserves a place on my shelf regardless of its bulky size.
- Can’t say it sounds too bright on my system. Quite balanced actually. Great separation, dynamic, need more like this!
Also, both records are see thru black, not solid black. Anyone else noticed? - Agree with other reviewers that this is a little bright, not uncomfortably so but also not to my liking. Unfortunate because the instrument separation is quite nice.
I'm also disappointed in the packaging - nice photos of Janis, but could we get some liner notes for the price? - Absolutely sublime! I love the package. The records sounds great and are dead quiet if properly washed.
- Edited 3 months agoI had high hopes for this album on the “OneStep”. It didn’t quite live up to expectations. It’s very good still. It’s bright in the top end (not overbearing) and lacks the bottom end gravitas I was hoping the Gain2 Ultra DSD & “OneStep” treatment might give it. Unfortunately, there are still ongoing quality control issues. “SuperWarpedVinyl” again for the umpteenth time! Grrrr! and this was yet another box set with the dreaded seam splits. You’d think after several years and countless complaints that these issues would be sorted. Nope! It’s unacceptable for the asking price. Not to mention Mofigate.
Shame on you MFSL! - My system leans bright on some recordings and this is one of them. Until I get my room treated correctly I am going to withhold rating but just a note that if your system leans towards bright on some recordings, it almost certainly will with this one. Which is to say I agree with some of the earlier reviews below. I also agree that it is lacking some bass but the clarity and soundstage are fantastic - as I think most 1-stages are.
- Edited one year agoMaybe I’m just a punk at heart, but I still like my 1971 version. Not better. But it sounds more dense and punchy. I can see the appeal of the separation and soundstage(?), but this isn’t a classical piece. Definitely keeping both. One for listening to, and one for dancing.
- Received mine with 2 of the 2nd disc (Side 3 and 4). So much for the improved quality control! Music Direct is sending me a new Disc 1 and the Customer Service was quick and easy over the phone. Anyone else have this issue?
- I compared this to my 1st UK pressing (which already was way better than my 1st NL) and the difference is impressive. The instruments have never sounded this good with so much more definition and depth to it. Joplins voice has never sounded this clear. It is obvious the recording of this album was never stellar but this is the best we can possibly get it. A very impressive release.
- My best sounding Vinyl record! The dynamics and soundstage are outstanding, and the vinyl is dead quiet! Definitely a must have. My copy is 3301/10000
