Ben Jacobs used to come now and again to a Sunday social I ran in and around 1997 with friends at Oxford's Jericho Tavern. It was called the Filanderer and Firkin at the time, I think. He lived and worked in London, but we had friends in common, and they'd all come through to Oxford together for the inevitable party at my house the Saturday night beforehand. He was putting 'Children at Play' together at the time, and would play the demo at the social, where it never failed to raise the roof. We were pretty excited for him when it got signed by Warp, and listening back to it now always makes me smile.

I'm sorry, but for a release as wonderful as this I have no doubt in my mind that Ben Jacobs is a genius.

Children At Play is 12 minutes, 55 seconds.

It starts off with a trinket-type theme, quickly turning to electronically jumbled madness. There is a strong influence of jazz in the entire track, and half-way through there is a strong feeling of synthesized madness as the climax is reached. This madness is composed of the song being meshed into a blender of triple time breaks.

This is one of my favourite tracks of all time.

Flip it over and you have CLIVE'S FOLLY, which is 12 minutes and 11 seconds of melodic happiness. It doesn't even compare to Side A, but it's still worth a good listen or two.

I learned to love this record. The main track on side A starts with a short child melody (which IMO sounds better played at 45 rpm) slightly distorted from time to time. It then turns into drill'n'bass mode with a jazzy attitude. I know many people who hate the loud trumpet solo line which appears in the middle of the track. The best part is sure the last third because of the nice vocal sequence in it, the beats become less there and vanish at the end while vocal melody remains, hardly understandable talking in the background is noticable. The other tune on the flipside is not bad as well, DJ's know how to use it properly...
