Reviews
- Funky Dividends Records has done an officially licensed reissue of this on 7". Definitely a great way to get the tracks on vinyl without having to pay the high prices that the OG 12" has been commanding.
- This is a nice record, no doubt, but people just being aware of it due to youtube clicks, and thats why it goes for much more money right now... there are so many better 12"es out there in the indie rap field, i am just sayin ;) people should dig a little more, if they feel tracks like this.. peace
- The illest, or maybe just most overlooked, record by the East Flatbush Project. Tried By 12 was an instant underground classic, and rightfully so, but these two cuts have stood the test of time, in my opinion.
Esteem rocks a half Freshco half Tim Dog or K Solo style/voice on Can't Hold It Back. His energy, voice, and delivery make some of his average lines sound a lot better and make you wanna hear it over and over. And he can crack a joke while still sounding intimidating on here.
This is definitely my favorite usage of that certain Bob James sample.
On the flipside, Payday does his thing as well. Lines like "I never took a loss for nothing that I had g, since the age of 3 I ran the streets crazy" and "I take ya loot and ya chain moneygrip, cause I'm on some bullshit, if I can't have what I want then I'm taking it" show you the ruggedness off the bat. The way Spencer Bellamy flips that Roland Kirk sample is quite remarkable in itself and makes this a winner automatically.
So, all in all, my advise is that if you dig all those "random 90s rap" indie records, you should definitely pick this one up. It doesn't sell for a lot but it is a much higher quality release than a LOT of those $300 records.
I'm no journalist, critic, or reviewer, so this is just a comment, just my own humble opinion.
