Reviews
- I destroyed this release in an Amazon review and I'll do it again here for your edification. This is a loudness wars disaster. The compression and brick walling are so severe that listener fatigue is fast in coming. The bass is obnoxiously loud and a cymbal being struck is clipped so badly that it sounds like a sheet of paper being rashly torn from a binder. In addition, the way the songs are presented is so sterile and clinical that it renders this impossible to enjoy if you ever heard the original albums.
- This is a rather interesting collection as it contains the same songs that were on the Chocolate Watchband LP's (etc) but not the same recordings. Apparently original vocals & things were cut and/or changed and the band was cut out of the decision-making process, and had no control over what was released. At any rate, this is great stuff, although some of it has false starts, etc., but that in no way detracts from the music. Also interesting to read the liner notes (which I have not done THOROUGHLY yet, there's lots). I used to live in San Jose (for 23 years) and the band originated from there, and the liner notes say they played at The Bold Night on Monterey Highway (a steak house which finally closed after going downhill for a few years) and The Brass Rail, a strip club in Sunnyvale (and yeah I've been there, I'm ashamed to admit...don't tell my mom though). Maybe it was nicer when they played there but I doubt it. And brief mention is made of original drummer Pete Curry (now "Pedro Del Mar" of Los Straitjackets), who was in the band only briefly before the line-up was finally solidified. Anyway, some excellent tracks on here & if you have the studio albums "Inner Mystique" & "No Way Out" and haven't heard some of these versions, you may want to get your mitts on this.
