- I was puzzled by this album back when it was released. Now it reminds me of good old times when Steve Roach did take risks with his releases now and then... Masterpiece of an album!
- Edited 3 years agoI can tell most SR fans didnt care for this release but me being quite the contrary to mainstream anything think this is a real stretch for Mr. Roach into new territory especially because at this point in the 90s all he was churning out was stale ambient tribal music. To my ears he must have been listening or channeling O' Yuki Conjugate or their side project A Small Good Thing(check out Slim westerns) whilst gathering inspiration for recording this brilliant release.
Imagine a old western ghost town abandoned wooden buildings creaking in the wind, sand being blown, tattered clothing left unclaimed on the lines, cactus being the only living thing in a gold rush town left abandoned decades ago. Steve takes that vibe and conjures up the music via harmonica(yes he does!), ambient textures, mechanical rhythms and Roger Kings evocative mourning guitar lashings. This is a soundtrack for mind and ears. no heavy sequencers, ethno chants none of that atypical sound he was known for in the late 90s. Kudos for making a bold new statement in his catalog. Respect to musicians who are willing to take a risk once in a while to shake their fan base up a little....Now back to Structures from Silence! - I am quite amazed to see such low ratings on this treasure. It is a unique sonic experiment bringing two creative masters of ambient together. And believe me, the result is beyond your imagination. Steve Roach transfers the listener to new magnificently deep territories and Roger King provides surprisingly fresh sound of western-style guitar accompanied by various percussions and natural sounds. "Dust to Dust" is literally breathing with hot desert air and you better listen to it without paying much attention to overall ratings. A strong conceptual standout in Roach's discography. 5/5
