- I absolutely love this record!! The clear vinyl, the trippy artwork insert and the little badge that accompanies this is just the icing on the cake and makes this just a perfect little package.
The music is extremely psychedelic with deranged, droning druggy vocal snippets that drag you inwards to the centre of these tracks. A wonderful record and one i can listen to over and over....a real little gem!!! Superb. - Edited 14 years agoWhat a nice little collectible item from the Downwards team. The transparent 10" is cool enough to stare at without even knowing what's on it. The info sheet has amazing, Andy Warholesque artwork on it, and the trippy spiralling contrast of red and white really enable me to pass beyond the limits of this galaxy.
As for the music, It Slipped Her Mind and New Purpose are both uncommon blends of dark pop, industrial, noise and post punk, which, while taking something from each of the mentioned genres, transcend them all. If you've listened to Tropic Of Cancer's (AKA Silent Servant) "The Dull Age/Victims" release also on Downwards [DO 2], from 2009, then imagine a more private and raucous modification of the A side on that record, topped off with drugged out vocals, and I guess that would bring you in vicinity of the sounds manifested here. Seriously, listen to this without preconceptions with your eyes closed, and you can envision two long haired hippies on psychedelics, kicking it on the beaches of Chapora in 1969.
Unlike their work on the labels they usually record for; Regis for Downwards and Silent Servant for Sandwell District, this shows a completely different and experimental side of these talented producers. Protection Now! is more along the lines of "Cubs! Do Your Best! / We Will Do Our Best!" [LINO 24], as it's a sharp, high pitched, disturbing piece of leftfield music.
The legendary Downwards imprint takes another step into the unknown, and heads in a brave and obscure direction many feeble minded trend followers don't even think about. If you've liked the other Sandra Electronics releases, and last year's album by Antonym [DO 3], then check this out as well, if for nothing else, then for the sake of owning this carefully packaged item, and keep an eye out for the forthcoming Dva Damas release on this label...
