- There are good songs on this, remember that this was 1981 and there was no fookin MIDI then…
Far superior to their poppy debut this takes the emerging technology of the hugely expensive fairlight sampler and much cheaper synth technology (808s, Simmons, Moog, Roland etc etc) to fashion an album that’s as far removed from Visage/Ultravox etc at the time, using as it does plaintive Rhodes piano and glistening synthetics to create some fabulous moments (I am a camera, vermillion sands, beatnik)
This is an important record in the development of synthesised music and as influential to some as Kraftwerk’s ‘computer world’ is to others…. - Edgy 80's breakthrough recording that certainly did Trevor Horns reputation no harm. Trouble is its one of those albums where the production is more interesting than the actual songs most of which which seem weak. Given the passage of time and the edition i am now reviewing with extra tracks and demo's it is the extra material which i like the most. Agree with the earlier reviewer that On TV is the stand out track.
- Brilliant album on par with Plastic Age tho I find areas of this album a bit more developed. Irregardless of this receiving ZERO airplay here in the US I love it. The remaster has a shit load of alt and bonus music. I wonder how much Geoffrey Downes was involved because to my ears it comes off as Art of Noise featuring Trevor Horn on vocals. Nevertheless for its time the electronic orchestrations, sampling and recording are top notch. Favorite tracks Vermillion Sands (love the use of 808 drums ) + bonus track We Can Fly From Here(not found on original release so you'll have to pony up the pounds/ dollars for a remaster Trevor will thank you for this!).
