Edited 5 years agoIn its pacing, dynamic range and (for want of a better phrase) conceptual reach, I'd place 'China's Eternal' as an early frontrunner in the transition from Punk to something more thoughtful and expansive. Not exactly 'the new cool' – but an indefinable cosmopolitanism as a conduit for the anxieties of the age? The episodic stop-start/quiet-loud structure, the repetitive chiming insistence, the tension held within the languid backbeat – all startling, modernist tropes which would become commonplace in the following years.....
