- Question for anyone who has a copy of this vinyl: is it common for the vinyl to skip the last, probably, fifteen seconds of the song? I just received this vinyl yesterday and was wondering if that is just how the recording is or not. I feel like this isn't how the record is supposed to end.
- Fad Gadget (Frank Tovey) is now dead.
The circumstances are, according to Mute Records Daniel Miller, a bit shady. Shocking news for fans who just this weekend attended his concert at the SAMA (Swedish Alternative Music Awards) in Göteborg, Sweden.
Fad Gadget was the first artist to ever sign a record deal with MUTE Records in the late 1970's. Fad Gadget largely became renowned for his self-mutilating concerts where he for instance tore out his pubic hair on stage when performing "Lady shave", a song encouraging women to stop shaving their legs. Then there is, of course, the Holland double feet incident.
Some of his biggest fans were Depeche Mode, who signed a record deal with MUTE the same night they supported Fad Gadget at the Bridgehouse.
After a row of hits like "Back to nature", "Ricky's hand" and "Insecticide" Fad Gadget was passed by other electro-pop-groups such as Human League, OMD and DAF. He attempted a come-back in the late 1980's, but was unsuccessful.
Tragically, Fad Gadget dies just when synthpop, after 15 years in the cold, is becoming supertrendy. The past six months he has been touring with Depeche Mode as their supporting act and MUTE has released his collected material.
New bands like Fisher Spooner and Crossover mention him as an important influence.
This tuesday, Fad Gadget wrote a letter to his black-clad fans on his homepage (www.fadgadget.co.uk), mostly to share how pleased he was with his gig in Gothenburg. It's hard to imagine sweeter words from an old synthpoper than "thank you, my children of the night".
- This is cult! You can still play it today along with tracks like Tainted Love - Soft Cell.
It´s a pitty that there are only 3 releases of Fad Gatget.
The last I heard of him was that he broke both legs during a concert in Hamburg in 1980.
