- Dom – At the Edge of Time (Melocord ST-LP-D 001, GER, 1972)
The real differences between the original and the counterfeit:
Cover: The covers are virtually inseparable as goes for gluing, weight, print, texture and color. On extremely close inspection one can perhaps distinguish a slightly deeper (darker) shade of purple on the original.
Labels: The labels are also virtually inseparable as goes for color ant printing. But regarding the ring that surrounds the center hole, this is slightly indented on the original, whereas it is slightly protruding on the counterfeit.
Vinyl: Here we find one of the most distinguished differences, as the weight of the original is 143 grams, whereas the counterfeit weighs in at a much less 112 grams.
Matrixes: Again, the matrixes prove to be a very distinguishable difference, as on the original we find the matrix ST-LPD-001-A hand etched on side one, with very small letters facing outwards, very close to the actual grooves. On side two the matrix is ST-LP<I 001-B (where “<I” is meant to be an inverted “D”) situated in similar fashion as that on side one. On the counterfeit the matrixes go over two lines being placed in the center of the run-out grooves, like this:
130211 /A
ST-LP-D0-01-A
130211/B
ST-LP-D0-01-B
The counterfeit matrixes are also hand etched, but in slightly larger letters than on the original.
Sound quality: It is very easy to hear the difference, as the original has very good sound quality whereas the counterfeit has a noisy, low fi sound. - Tortoise sampled Silence in "Dear Grandma and Grandpa", from Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die.
- DOM emerged from two german beat groups called "The Early Birds" and "The Set Minds" and recorded this absolutely weird piece of music back in 1970 which was released as a private pressing in 1972.
Mind-boggling anyway it may keep your mouth open for nearly forty minutes of sonic distortion.
Somebody tried to find references to Floyd´s "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" but the truth is that this record is even more far out than any record the Floyd could ever have recorded, also if you are back in those heady days of musical mutations.
Four Tracks called "Introitus", "Silence", "Edge Of Time" and "Dream" will leave any listener alone and confused after purchasing this monster of stoned and drugged-up-to-the-eyeballs obscure german psychedelia. Incomparable to anything recorded which could make its way to a record shop or a radio station. A musical nightmare after all which you won´t forget. - Does anyone know about an existing early "80´s" reissue of this, or was there a slightly later pressing made in the early 70´s??
My copy, sold to me as an original for 300 Euro, has the normal opening on the right hand-side of the cover, and the vinyl is pretty thin. Any info? - A recently new unplayed original copy of this album seems to have the same problem as another VG+ copy that I just got rid of. "Silence" plays with lots of crackle
