Reviews
- Steve Gillette was one of a great many singer-songwriters to emerge during the early-60s folk scene. Although he was working as a professional musician since at least 1964 (when he co-wrote what is probably his most famous song, “Darcy Farrow”), this was the only album he released during the 1960s, which may be one reason why he has remained obscure. The prevailing sound of the album is muted and ethereal; the music seems to emerge from a deep blue haze. The songs (almost all written by Gillette and/or long-time collaborators Tom Campbell and Linda Albertano) tend to have a strong traditional-ballad influence, particularly “Darcy Farrow”, “The Erlking”, and “Springtime Meadows”.
- Superb US Folk Rock with Folk Psych touches.....his 1st and best album with backing from Bruce Langhorne, Dick Rosmini & Bill Lee. The album has some truly magnificent songs and some wonderful dual guitarwork. It includes the original versions of 'The Erlking', 'Back On The Street Again', 'Darcy Farrow', '2:10 Train', 'Springtime Meadows', 'Many The Times'....but just about every track is excellent. It has to be one of the best Folk Rock albums ever recorded!
