- Edited 7 months agoI’m sure my comment is going to offend the die-hard only-vinyl folks…and never in my wildest imagination could I ever have dreamt I’d one day be saying this - but here goes. Read closely…
Sure, a vinyl reissue of this classic would really be a dream come true …a miracle even.
But there’s something truly magical and special about this original CD version; that I believe will always remain unrivaled. There’s something to be said for the beauty and an almost story-like conceptual trajectory with uninterrupted deep listening sessions of this album. Being able to sit down, and really LISTEN to the beauty from start to finish is something far superior than having to get up and change sides every 2 tracks or so. With the length of this release - my guess is this album would have to go on at least a 4xLP set which would benefit greatly sound-quality-wise albeit would probably most certainly NEED to be on a 4xLP release due to the duration.
With the annoying-as-hell consistent inconsistencies and unreliability of modern day pressing plants - getting a decent sounding pressing which wouldn’t be at least a little bit slightly warped like 90% of the vinyl coming out these days just doesn’t seem to be worthy of this masterpiece.
Personally I find the uninterrupted listening experience of this album mandatory as I just don’t listen to it any other way after all these years. An experience I very much liken to the original CD release of 2814 - BIRTH OF A NEW DAY (新しい日の誕生).
Furthermore - there are some tonal frequencies primarily in the lower Hz range and a spatial soundstage that I truly believe vinyl just would not be able to do justice. Glass mastered CD’s have a very unique clarity that even the very highest uncompressed WAV, FLAC, and M4A digital audio can’t replicate.
Not unlike DJ Sprinkles – Midtown 120 Blues - who intentionally avoided LP pressing of one of the BEST Deep-House albums to ever be composed; who proudly states - “There are no plans for a vinyl edition because the bass spatialization effects that give many of these recordings their sonic character are incompatible with vinyl mastering techniques.”
I would imagine Liumin might also share some of the same sonic qualities in that regard, though I could be totally wrong - considering so many other Modell/Deepchord releases ARE available on vinyl…and if I am wrong - then why is this one of the few Deepchord/Modell releases NOT available on vinyl…yet? One can only speculate.
Sure, let’s say we do get lucky and see this into a nice lovely, hefty, thick-n-meaty 4xLP Vinyl pressing…if you’re lucky enough to get a copy before it sells out and not have to pay triple the cost from some greedy deep-pocketed flipper here…
Flip a coin - it won’t show up with some split seams, a slight bend & warp in no less than one of the records … and we all get to sit back and play a poorly pressed vinyl version we’d need to get up and change sides 5 times which interrupts writing our disgruntled reviews while we wade through the noisy hisses, pops & clicks complaining about how god awful the pressing quality is on a vinyl reissue we waited 15 years for… - Could this ever be pressed on Vinyl? I imagine it would need to be a 3LP, but I honestly don't care if this will be a bit expensive. Best Dub-Techno album since the original Basic Channel and Chain Reaction releases
- Edited 10 months agountitled (Track 7) seems like a version of the track "Rippling" from their 2012 released Silent World album.
- Edited one year agoplease repress this shit bro please i just wanna get a copy without having to pay $60
- please put this on vinyl. at least the first disc.
Listening to this while riding the Tokyo subway system is something else. If you're ever in Tokyo, set aside like two hours, jump on a train, and chuck this on. Surreal experience. - I've just paid 40€ for this. Don't think i've ever spent over 15€ for a CD but it'll be the best 40€ i've ever paid for electronic/techno music. As others have stated, this is simply an amazing piece of pure Dub Techno bliss that hasn't been surpassed since it was released.
- On Deepchord’s second and final album for Modern Love, LIUMIN, they haven’t entirely moved away from the dub techno that marked their earlier work, but they definitely have embraced the techno side of things, though not without incorporating plenty of field recordings of the Tokyo subway to fill the cracks between tracks. “In Echospace” opens with spacious ambience before “Summer Haze,” true to its name, offers up a warm miasma of sound through which the beats cut. “Sub-Marine” introduces some almost funky tech-house, whereas “Burnt Sage” lets its bass throb as a few melancholy tones pierce through the fog. “BCN Dub” has the percussion saturating the space, leaving room only for a few ghostly sonic reflections in the background before “Firefly” gives way to smooth tech-house, though still with that grainy Deepchord aesthetic. “Maglev” punches the beat back to 100% before “Float” layers in the chaos with its thick sustained tones above the rhythm. “Warm” closes the album on pure ambience, letting the sounds of Toyko drift in and out. On the second disc, LIUMIN REDUCED, Deepchord indulges their more ambient side, letting the field recordings take center stage with only a delicate sustained chord to hold up “Track 1,” while “Track 2” offers more melody amidst its crackling atmosphere. “Track 4” has more of a buzz in the background, an urgency of stillness, and “Track 5” returns to the rumble of subways and street noise as “Track 6” twinkles slowly. A hint of warmth creeps into “Track 8” but disappears into the moodier drift of “Track 9.” “Track 11” gives a sense of drifting in the world, a state of presence in a place without an actual presence, while “Track 12” sweeps back and forth between these spaces. Through and through, a modern classic.
