Reviews
- I actually really dig this record, I think bootlegs and whatnot have been a huge influence in record collecting culture so im not bugged it’s an unofficial press. The record itself plays pretty well for me at least (i use a ortofon 2m red). From my knowledge it’s a bunch of songs only ever released in a cd boxset so you wont find this on streaming.
Tldr; It plays very well and I think it’s a gem to be able to listen to these tracks since you really cant anywhere else (besides some cd boxset) - I can't find out if the quality of the sound production and quality of the music for this recording is any good. I can't find any of the tracks by googling them, to have a test listen, (admittedly, I don't go too deep into this, I use the larger sites . . .).
I wonder if the sellers of this item expect people to buy this recording unheard, unreviewed, with little idea of what they are getting - perhaps the item wouldn't sell if people knew what they are getting. I find that kind of selling dubious.
Further, if you research this release, you can find it selling in many places, all sorts of independent stores and internet sites. It is selling in the UK, USA, Germany, Poland . . . it begs the question what "limited edition" means. Are they limitting the sales, just because it is not a product which is going to appeal to the masses, because these are demos, 'unfinished' works, of interest to fans only? (And, importantly, maybe not of interest even to fans?)
Despite this release floating in unknown waters. Because of the iconic name - JOY DIVISION – the name itself will sell some plastic, actual music unheard.
Over the decades (!), I have bought a few of these fringe recordings for various bands and which sometimes I like. You have to be careful, the lack of info gets tiringly tedious. Once I asked the guy behind the counter if the recording was any good and got the response “dunno”. Some can be a pleasant surprise with a gem of a track which you wonder why it wasn't released elsewhere, of course that is the pull. Others are a waste of time and space - recordings with track after track which are muffled, lack any kind of dynamism or life and are ultimately dull.
CAVEAT: Of course, this could be a good recording. I’d love to know, because I am genuinely interested. For instance I’d like to hear the Atmosphere track, and it is fascinating that it’s listed under a different title, Chance. Maybe what I write is better placed for another ‘fringe’ recording, sorry if so. - i got this the other day. sounds about as you'd expect from a clear vinyl bootleg. light popping throughout on side a. side b is a little better. havent given it a proper clean so maybe itll improve a bit but i doubt it. all in all, down to have some of these version on vinyl
