- I have variant 12, lacquer cut by ML (Maurice Long) on side 1, no initials on Side 2 and to my ears S1 sounds a bit better. Side 2 sounds great but I give a slight edge to side one, a bit louder and fuller.
- Just picked this up along with a bunch of early Capitol mid 70s reissues… and damn this one really does stand out as sounding especially good.
- Have to agree with the comments that it's a great sounding pressing. I'm going through my duplicates to try to thin down my collection a little and just compared this to a mono first pressing and this is really much better.
- Edited 2 years agoIn spite of the bad experiences of the Beatles US pressings, this is a great sounding record! There'
s no 20 khz and "laughing" in the runout grooves. - I just purchased this LP variant. My pressing has KP in the dead wax. I must say that these Orange Capitols do sound pretty nice.
I purchased a Winchester (I didn't of course know that at the time) in 1976 and I always thought that it was a great sounding LP even after it got very noisy after very many spins. I just purchased a near mint copy of this Winchester pressing and I must say it sounds great...vocals are awesome and it is a very warm presentation. This pressing beats the Jack Hunt MFSL easily. Just get a clean copy. - Matrix variant 1 is pressed at the Winchester VA plant and should probably have it's own entry. The disc labels say SMAS but the etching is SMAL. I have that exact issue.
- Edited 8 years agoSMAL 2653 on back cover, The etching is what appears to be on side 1: SMAL with an S etched over the L and then 1 - 2653 G (or C) 34 #4. Side 2: SMAL 2 - 2653 F 39. Both sides have Mastered By Capitol. Orange Label. I agree it is a great sounding LP.
- I have this copy, but on the back cover, it lists the catalog # as SMAL 2653, but the label identifies it as SMAS. Great sounding LP.
- I believe I have this copy, but this is the only difference:
Matrix / Runout: SMAS-1-2653 F36 #2 MASTERED BY CAPITOL
(i.e. #2 instead of #3). However my copy has a hole punch on the upper left side, but does not go all the through. The hole punch indented the insert, but did not pierce it. So I am unsure if this is a promo or something since my copy matches everything else listed.
