This is a fantastic pressing. Almost no surface noise at all. The “problem” with this album if you can call it a problem lies with the mixing and mastering. Some songs on this sound more detailed and less compressed, others more compressed and less soundstage. This album has been recorded in several different locations and the attention to uniformity in the sound isn’t there. Does it bother me? For me personally, this record sounds like a collection of songs rather than a conceptual whole. So to me, it doesn’t need to sound uniform the whole way through. Could it have been better, more uniform with more sonic detail and soundstage etc? Of course. While every song is sequenced really well they have their own personality. It’s the vibe of hearing different people sing around a campfire. Not everyone will sound the same. Tho I wish some of the songs were better produced in the record overall it’s okay.
I agree with other reviews that this Big Thief LP is varied in terms overall sound quality, likely due to the intentional use of different recording locations. Personally, I like it as it makes the double LP a journey into the music of Big Thief. The moods are even more varied than their other LPs. A very satisfying album to listen to from front to back.
5 stars for Music; 3 stars for pressing. This is a full band record with lots of studio space and none of that comes through. This deserves Fleetwood-like fidelity.
