Reviews
- Edited 5 years agoMost folks give 'Clarity' the nod as JEW's best LP, but I think hands-down it's 'Static Prevails.' The band is still rooted in the Christie Front Drive / punk rock roots that give this LP a purity and an emotional resonance lost in the bigger production and more pop-oriented songs on later LP's. Not to say they don't have some incredible LP's that follow this, and some stunning songs, but as a collection, this LP delivers on all fronts. Like so many bands, it's this youthful abandon that cannot be recaptured. And though 'A Sunday,' off of 'Clarity,' and (oddly) 'Let It Happen,' off of 'Chase the Light,' (which is a mediocre LP aside form 'Let it Happen,' 'Big Casino ,'and 'Electable..' which are all absolutely top-notch JEW tunes) are my two favorite JEW songs, this LP has 3rd,4th and 5th favorites with 'Call it in the Air,' 'Rockstar,' and the incredible, 'Seventeen.' The reissues are well packaged (though a lyric sheet would have been welcome), and it's nice to be able to have the bonus songs as well. An astounding LP that holds up extremely well and one that sounds amazing crackling off my turntable as I drink a Makers Mark and remember being young and full of heart / anger. Drinks for all!
