If ever there was a soundtrack to an imagined film, this is it.

Perhaps something like a puppet shadowplay, while corpses pile and rot round the stricken listener.

WHEN - THE BLACK DEATH (Tatra TATCD 008) CD 39m
Sonic sculpture and collage maestro Lars Pedersen is back again with another ambitious concoction of sound, texture and misused music. Actually the music is a depiction of a new book by one Theodor Kittelsen called "Svartedauen" (The Black Death), and as such Lars has really gone to town with a deft construction that combines atmosphere and thunderous dynamics, all types of musics are hijacked: grand orchestras, military bands, folk musics (polkas, jigs and reels), etc., all twisted, altered, looped or treated in some way. As the first When release to avoid any melodic composed structure at all, this is certainly his most intensive and challenging yet. My only criticism: an annoying fade-out ending - surely another thunderous crash would have been a far superior curtailment, but otherwise - devastating!
