Notes
Limited to 30,000 pressed with the banned cover however the cover was pulled from the shelves which may have limited the 30k to far less in circulation.
According to Rolling Stone, it was “mastered with vinyl in mind, to be edited with a razor blade applied to two-inch tape, to be mixed by five people frantically pushing faders at a non-automated mixing board.”
“We used classic instruments and classic amps,” producer Mike Clink said. “Our approach was reminiscent of stuff that was done in the sixties and early seventies.”
Catalogue number XXXG 24148 is listed on the spine but GHS 24148 is listed on the insert, on center labeling and on Cross Tattoo Sticker (if present).
Some copies of this release came with the 'Cross Tattoo' sticker.
Please note: The Dead Pool is a movie from 1988, so copies with a square "THE DEAD POOL" sticker could be later pressings.

- My copy has "Dead Pool" hype sticker, cat number on spine and embossed "A" on label, but does not have embossed "EAST".
Anyone has same copy?
By the way, it sounds just amazing... - This US 1st SRC (E.A.S.T. text embosed on the R-side of the label) pressing sounds great. The sound is fresh, punchy, airy and crisp.
Olyphant PA-based, Specialty Records Corp. [SP or SRC] was WEA's "EAST" Coast pressing hub. - According to https://www.mentalfloss.com/posts/guns-n-roses-appetite-for-destruction-music-facts, 30K copies of the banned cover were made with the cross replacement cover copies ready to go to retail on release date back in 1987.
- I have this version (i think) but the insert reads: XXXG 24148. R-side has EAST embossed. the info said the insert would have different text... anybody has any idea?!?
- Edited one year agoQuick Q for the knowledgeable... I've had this since I was a kid in the 80's / 90's. Bought it because of the banned cover. I already had the release version of "Appetite" so there was never a reason to open this. I am pretty sure its original. What 'hallmarks' should I look for on the front and back to verify it for any potential buyer? How do I tell which pressing it is without opening? (Allied vs SRC)
I have the hype sticker warning label with GHS 24148 on the front side and XXXG 24148 on the spine. Anything else? I'm not much of a GNR fan. Is it a good time to sell? Thanks!
