Notes
Collection is an artwork by Sven Anderson for Glebe House and Gallery in Donegal, Ireland. Realised between 2021 and 2022, the artwork comprises an outdoor sound installation and a limited edition vinyl double LP.
The material for the work is drawn from the late painter Derek Hill’s music collection. Over his lifetime, Hill collected over 1500 phonographs including vocal and orchestral recordings dating back to the early 1900s. Many of these records are compilations that capture the voices of renowned opera singers throughout their careers. Collection reactivates these voices, which have rested silently in Glebe House beside Lough Gartan where the painter resided for over thirty years before leaving his home to the Irish people in 1982. In Collection, fragments from a selection of these records have been transformed into delicate acoustic textures in which voices and instruments are folded back into themselves to reveal hidden resonances.
For the installation, these sounds emerge from six loudspeakers on the west side of Glebe House, facing out from the wall behind which Hill used to listen to his records. The sounds stretch from the house to the lake, progressing through a series of movements that sway between the euphoric and the melancholic. Bordered by long silences, these movements allow other sounds to shift in and out of focus within the landscape.
The double LP presents nine of these movements that have been shortened and remixed for stereo playback. The vinyl has been pressed to maximise the material’s resonance and released in a hand-numbered edition of 300 copies with gatefold packaging and a four-page insert with a poster and an essay by the artist.
Total duration: 72m58s.
Collection was produced between Glebe House (Donegal) and Mountjoy Square (Dublin) between April and August, 2021. The double LP was finalised in April, 2022.
