Wendell Stuart and The Downbeaters - "Wendell Stuart and The Downbeaters" on Elite
Wendell Stuart is a Bahamian singer and guitarist with a cool, relaxed, and utterly soulful style. I passed up this terrific album so many times thinking it was the usual pedestrian island lounge music affair. It's one of those I came across so often when digging for Caribbean music, that I had just written it off, and while this music is incredibly mellow there's nothing pedestrian about it. My ears were opened wide when I happened to stumble upon his version of the Motown hit "My World Is Empty Without You" and was totally floored by the power and beauty of the simple and direct approach. It's a small 5 piece combo with a quiet but tightly rhythmic sound, providing a subtly sophisticated backdrop for Stuart's amazing voice.
Anyone who lived through the 1980s will undoubtedly recognize the first song linked below - Stuart's version has redefined the song for me as much as Naked Eyes' new wave version redefined the classic Bacharach/David composition (originally recorded by Lou Johnson in 1963, and various other artists subsequently). The tune opens feeling almost like a bossa, drums softly chugging along as the bass and guitar take liberties without getting too out of line. I could listen to this all day!!
Aside from a moving version of "Hey Jude" and the two pervious mentioned covers, the remaining tracklist is composed of Caribbean favorites delivered in the same sleek soulful style. Downbeaters' backing vocalist Alvin Bullard steps up to take the lead on a couple numbers, and he has a great voice that pairs well with Stuart's higher pitched and slightly raspy voice. The band sounds sharp throughout and there is some tremendous guitar playing, and the bassist, although somewhat obscured in the mix, has a busy style that still manages to keep in the pocket.
I can't recommend this one highly enough.

I second not having any defects on this LP; minimal amount of surface noise attributed to condition.

My copy has an odd weird factory defect on a couple of tracks (2, 3, 4) of Side 1 in which there is a nasty static noise. I'm assuming this is a factory defect. Anyone else have this problem. Sadly this copy is autographed by Wendell Stuart, and the music is amazing but this defect makes the songs nearly unlistenable.
