- Edited 3 months agoAlways a big moment when Kassem drops a new release, particularly an album. As I was listening to this it occurred to me that it sounded a lot like an MM/KM collaboration, so when I checked the credits and saw that Mix Mup mixed this album I wasn't at all surprised. Another Discogs member mentioned that the second record is where the real magic can be found, and I see his point -- this album does have a slight feel of having two records with two slightly different vibes. I think a passive listener might not hear the differences, but a Kassem connoisseur will most definitely pick up on some subtle shifts. After listening to it once I can only say that I really enjoy it, but have some very distant mixed feelings, too. However, I always feel this way with a record that challenges me and isn't quite what I expected -- always a good thing. Upon my first and only listen, C2 stands out as the beautiful centerpiece of a masterfully crafted listening experience. It's full of life and character that the rest of the tracks don't have. This leads me to wonder where the rest of this energy is in regard to the rest of the album, but that clearly wasn't the intention. The rest of the tracks are immaculately produced swaths of groove and drums that only Kassem can dream up. Personally, I would have loved to hear some more melody and structure (harking back to his earliest Workshop releases), but that sound is clearly a thing of the past for Kassem. Workshop 32 sounds a lot like Kassem marrying his old sound with his new sound, and there's certainly nothing wrong with that. The fact that Mix Mup is involved only adds a delicious icing to the cake.
And a bit of trivia: the voice you hear on "Provide Those Ends" is from the movie "Clockers". - The biggest mistake you could do is to rate this album based on the A/B side. Since he biggest things start to happen with C1 and continue until the end. Big up once again Kassem and Workshop!
- What a fantastic album! It’s the perfect follow up to the Workshop 19 album. The classic Kassem Mosse sound updated for 2023.
